Marking International Literacy Day: Literacy surge in Afghanistan
8 September marks 2011 International Literacy Day: Literacy for Peace. The day, celebrated worldwide, focuses on the link between literacy and peace and reminds the international community of the importance of literacy and adult learning globally.
The UK is a long-term partner for Afghanistan. Alongside school construction and refurbishment, the team is funding school supplies, working with the Ministry of Education to lead teacher training, and helping the Afghani Department of Education build its managerial capacity.
In the next four years, UK aid in Afghanistan will work to continue to build on the surge in literacy rates since the fall of the Taliban and accelerating progress towards the goals of having more than six million children attending school by 2013, working with the Afghan government to create 200,000 new jobs for men and women, and providing technical and vocational education and training for 45,000 young people.
