The people of the Falkland Islands are British out of choice. They are free to determine their own future, and there will be no negotiations with Argentina on sovereignty unless the Islanders wish it.
We are not militarising the South Atlantic. Our defensive posture in the Falklands remains unchanged, though we remain firmly committed to the defence and security of the Falklands.
UN action is a matter for Argentina. The Falklands is already discussed annually in the C24 Committee. The UK has no doubt about our sovereignty over the Falklands, and the principle of self-determination, as set out in the UN Charter, underlies our position.

The British, German, French, Belgian, Irish and Greek Consulates-General in Atlanta, Georgia issued a joint statement on the case of Mr Troy Davis.
The British, German, French, Belgian, Irish and Greek Consulates-General in Atlanta, Georgia would like to draw attention to the September 19 statement (full text) issued by the European Union on the case of Mr Troy Davis. While we certainly understand the pain of victims of violent crime and their families, we also recall that no legal system, however thorough, is immune from miscarriages of justice, and with the death penalty, these can never be put right. That is why the European Union has reaffirmed its principled and longstanding opposition to the use of capital punishment under all circumstances.
Issued on behalf of:
Annabelle Malins, HM Consul General, United Kingdom
Benoît Standaert, Consul General of Belgium
Lutz H. Görgens, Consul General of Germany
Pascal Le Deunff, Consul General of France
Paul Gleeson, Consul General of the Republic of Ireland
Vasili Goulousis, Consul of Greece

Marking International Literacy Day: Literacy surge in Afghanistan
8 September marks 2011 International Literacy Day: Literacy for Peace. The day, celebrated worldwide, focuses on the link between literacy and peace and reminds the international community of the importance of literacy and adult learning globally.
The UK is a long-term partner for Afghanistan. Alongside school construction and refurbishment, the team is funding school supplies, working with the Ministry of Education to lead teacher training, and helping the Afghani Department of Education build its managerial capacity.
In the next four years, UK aid in Afghanistan will work to continue to build on the surge in literacy rates since the fall of the Taliban and accelerating progress towards the goals of having more than six million children attending school by 2013, working with the Afghan government to create 200,000 new jobs for men and women, and providing technical and vocational education and training for 45,000 young people.
